FREE Ringtones come in many different styles and melodies. Just that same they come in different formats as well. Most commonly known are the inbuilt composer that is already on your mobile, the keypress format and the Nokia RTTL format.
However, what you are probably all wanting nowadays with the newer models out now of the mobile phone are the polyphonic ringtones. These sound somewhat nice to those above as they have more tones that can be played around with. These formats are called mmp or midi.
